Painting Kunuku House Curaçao
Original hand-painted painting with a kunuku house. A kunuku house (Papiamento: kas di kunuku) is a former slave house on Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire.Kunuku means ‘plantation’ (and also ‘countryside’). After the conquest of the islands by the Dutch, the West India Company established large-scale plantations for trade with Europe. Slaves were brought from Africa to work on the plantations and built houses on the plantation grounds, in the style customary in West Africa.
